I was about halfway through visiting an Ottoman Palace in the old walled city section of Istanbul. The palace grounds were vast with long tree-lined lawns punctuated with buildings. Each building served its own purpose and each one was highly decorated with elaborate wall paintings and tiles. I happened upon a wall of blue and white. Made entirely of 4-inch ceramic tiles, the wall was a tight filigree of vines, leaves, and flowers. And if you looked more closely, there were birds hidden in this blue jungle. I took many pictures, and this is one of two that I developed into my art, both give these little hidden birds center stage. I most enjoy seeing them displayed together. Whether they face towards each other or away, the make a delightful pair. The other is named “Iznik Palace Bird with Bud.”
